Dental implants

What implants are, who may be suitable, costs and care.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small post, usually made of titanium or zirconia, that is placed in the jawbone to act as a replacement tooth root. Once the bone has healed around it, it can support a crown, a bridge or a full-arch set of teeth.

Implants are one of several ways to replace missing teeth, alongside bridges and dentures. Learn how dental implant treatment works.

Who may be suitable for dental implants?

Many adults with missing teeth can be considered for implants, but suitability depends on individual factors, including:

  • healthy gums, or gum disease that has been treated and is stable
  • enough jawbone to hold an implant, or ways to address bone loss
  • general health, such as diabetes control, and any medicines you take
  • smoking, which can affect healing
  • being able to clean around implants every day

Only an examination by a dentist, usually with X-rays or a 3D scan, can show whether implants are suitable for you.

What factors affect dental implant treatment costs?

The cost depends on your individual treatment plan. The main factors include:

  • the number of implants needed
  • whether extractions, gum treatment or bone grafting are needed first
  • the type of restoration: a single crown, a bridge, a full-arch bridge or an implant-retained denture
  • the materials used for the final teeth
  • imaging, temporary teeth and the number of visits

The clinic can explain the costs of the options that suit you once your assessment is complete.

What maintenance do implant-supported teeth require?

Implant-supported teeth need daily care, just like natural teeth:

  • brush twice a day and clean around each implant, for example with interdental brushes, floss designed for bridges or a water flosser, as advised
  • keep regular check-ups and professional cleaning appointments, so the gums, bone and bite can be checked
  • contact the clinic if you notice bleeding, swelling, looseness or a change in your bite
  • avoid smoking, and wear a night guard if one is recommended for grinding

Full-arch and full mouth treatment

Full mouth reconstruction, full-arch implants and their alternatives.

Is full mouth reconstruction the same as All-on-4?

No. Full mouth reconstruction, also called full mouth rehabilitation, is a broad term for an individual plan to restore many or all of the teeth. Depending on what is needed, it may include gum treatment, root canal treatment, fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures or implants.

All-on-4 is one specific way of replacing all the teeth in one jaw with a fixed bridge on four implants. Many full mouth reconstructions do not involve All-on-4, or implants at all. Learn about full mouth reconstruction.

How long can full mouth implant treatment take?

There is no single timeline. After implants are placed, the bone usually needs time to heal around them before the final teeth are fitted, and this often takes a few months. Extractions, gum treatment or bone grafting can add time, and some plans are carried out in phases.

Your dentist will explain the stages and visits that apply to your plan. A timeline can only be given after your assessment.

What are the alternatives to full-arch dental implants?

Depending on your situation, alternatives may include:

  • a complete denture, which you remove for cleaning
  • an implant-retained overdenture, a removable denture that clips onto two or more implants
  • bridges or partial dentures, if some healthy teeth remain
  • keeping and restoring natural teeth, where that is possible

Each option has its own benefits, limitations and costs, and no single option is best for everyone. Your dentist can talk you through the options that suit you.
